WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is a disease, not a "temporal" condition.
HOW DOES ACNE DEVELOP?
Caused by the body’s increased production of the hormone androgen (produced by both men and women), the sebaceous glands are stimulated to produce more oil. The increased production of oil causes the pores to become blocked, so that the oil cannot come up to the skin’s surface. The acne itself is an infection, caused by skin bacteria which feed on and break down this oil. As the bacteria multiply, waste products and sebacic acid are created. The sebaceous glands become inflamed resulting in what is know as a pimple, a whitehead, a blackhead or cyst.
- Pimples are small swellings which sometimes contain pus
- Whiteheads are small flesh or white coloured bumps due to skin pore blockage
- Blackheads are dark formations on the skin due to an accumulated mixture of oil and cells in a blocked skin pore
- Cysts are closed sacs beneath the skin or deeper that contain fluid or semisolid substance.
