Veins
WHAT ARE BROKEN VEINS?
New advances in laser technology now permit the safe and effective removal of spider-like veins on the face and body called telangiectasia.
These veins are generally part of the ageing process, the result of hormones, over exposure to the sun or simply due to genetics. Most of us feel these capillaries detract from our appearance. With a quick and easy treatment, there is no longer a reason to live with this condition.
What causes broken veins?
The skin is a medium of temperature control, so when we are very hot the capillaries dilate to release heat and constrict to conserve heat. When this process happens too frequently the elasticity in the capillary walls is lost, resulting in dilated capillaries.
What does the treatment involve?
Precisely controlled strong pulses of filtered light are absorbed by the targeted blood vessel, heating it to a point where it is destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly clear and are reabsorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original thread vein. The light impairs the vein without damaging the surrounding tissue, which makes this a safe and effective procedure.
How is the treatment performed?
Goggles or stickers are worn to protect the eyes. A layer of cold gel is applied to the area, which helps guide the light into the skin. The light applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. These precisely controlled, strong pulses of filtered light are absorbed by the blood vessel, heating it to a point where it is destroyed. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The chilled gel is removed, the area cooled and moisturised.
How does the treatment feel?
Most describe the discomfort as moderate and acceptable. Sensations may vary, yet usually described as a heat sensation.
Are there any side effects?
Redness and a warm sensation are normal after treatment. A cool pack is applied to ease these symptoms. The vessels should fade quickly and in most cases disappear.
